Full Head Colour vs Root Tint — Which Do You Need?
When it comes to hair colouring in Rugby, two of the most common services we do are full head colour and root tints. They sound similar but they’re actually quite different — and knowing which one you need can save you time and money.
What Is a Full Head Colour?
A full head colour means we apply colour to your entire head of hair, root to tip. This is what you need if you’re:
- Changing your colour completely (going darker, lighter, or a new tone)
- Colouring your hair for the first time
- Refreshing faded lengths that have gone dull or brassy
- Covering grey throughout your hair
It gives an even, all-over result and is the starting point for most colour transformations.

What Is a Root Tint?
A root tint (sometimes called a root touch-up) is exactly what it sounds like — we apply colour to your roots only, blending them into your existing colour. This is the service for you if:
- You already love your colour and just need the regrowth sorted
- You’re covering grey roots
- Your lengths still look great from your last appointment
It’s quicker, more affordable, and less processing on your hair — which is always a good thing.

How Do You Know Which One You Need?
As a general rule:
First time colouring or changing colour? → Full head colour
Happy with your colour, just need the roots done? → Root tint
Colour looking faded or uneven throughout? → Full head colour (or a root tint with a glossing treatment to refresh the ends)
If you’re not sure, don’t worry — we’ll take a look at your hair and recommend the best option when you come in.
Skin Test Requirement
Just a quick note — if you’re new to us or haven’t had a colour in the last 6 months, we’ll need to do a skin test at least 48 hours before your appointment. It’s a quick patch test to check you won’t have a reaction to the colour. It’s a legal requirement and it only takes a couple of minutes. Just pop in or let us know and we’ll sort it out.
How Often Should You Rebook?
For root tints, most of our clients in Warwickshire come back every 4–6 weeks, depending on how quickly their hair grows and how much grey they’re covering.
Full head colours can last longer — usually 6–8 weeks — but it depends on the colour and your hair type.
