Full Head or Half Head Foils? Here’s How to Choose

Highlights are one of those treatments that can completely transform your hair — but when you’re booking, you might wonder: do I need full head foils or half head? Let’s break it down.

What Are Full Head Foils?

Full head foils mean we place highlights through your entire head of hair — top, sides, back, underneath, everywhere. This gives an all-over lighter, brighter look with lots of dimension.

If you want a big change, if you’re naturally quite dark and want to go significantly lighter, or if you want highlights visible no matter how you wear your hair — full head foils are the way to go.

What About Half Head Foils?

Half head foils concentrate the highlights around your crown, parting, and the front sections — basically the areas that catch the light and frame your face. The underneath stays your natural colour.

This is a great option if you want a more subtle lift, if you’re topping up existing highlights, or if you want to keep things a bit more natural. It’s also quicker and a bit easier on the purse.

Which One Is Right for You?

Here’s a quick guide:

Go for full head foils if you:

  • Want an all-over lighter look
  • Wear your hair up a lot and want highlights visible throughout
  • Are going for a dramatic change
  • Have darker hair and want significant lift

Go for half head foils if you:

  • Want a more natural, sun-kissed effect
  • Mainly wear your hair down
  • Are maintaining existing highlights
  • Want a quicker, more affordable appointment

Not sure? That’s completely fine — we’ll have a chat at your consultation and work out the best option together.

How Long Do They Take?

Full head foils usually take around 2–3 hours including your toner and blow-dry. Half head foils are a bit quicker — typically 1.5–2 hours. Both include a 45-minute processing gap where you can relax with a cuppa while the colour develops.

Pricing

At Amy Walker Hair in Rugby, highlights start from:

  • Half head foils — from £62
  • Full head foils — from £75

We’ll confirm the exact price based on your hair at your consultation.

Keeping Your Highlights Fresh

To keep your highlights looking their best, we recommend rebooking every 8–12 weeks. Using a colour-safe shampoo and a good heat protectant will help them last longer between visits. We can recommend the right products for your hair type.
